Commission on Human Rights

The Commission on Human Rights has the responsibility of enforcing the City's Human Rights Ordinance and monitoring fair housing laws and policies. The Human Rights Commission has general jurisdiction to hear disputes and appeals referred by the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity.

The Commission annually co-sponsors the following events and activities to help the community foster mutual respect and understanding of all persons and racial, religious and nationality groups: Fair Housing Month Essay and Poster contest, Juneteenth Celebration, and Race Equality and Inclusive Communities Week.

This Commission consists of nine members serving staggered terms. Members serve for one, two and three-year terms. They must reside in the City of Albany and posses a reputation for fairness, integrity and responsibility. Officers and employees of the City of Albany are not eligible for appointment to the Commission on Human Rights.
