While Albany's water mains do not contain lead, the water service line running from the water main to your home may be made of lead, especially if your house was built before 1940.
Read the frequently asked questions about the Lead Water Service Replacement Program.
Complete the steps outlined in the instructions document and submit your results. This information will help in the planning of a City-wide lead pipe replacement program.
You will need a key or a coin and a strong refrigerator magnet
Find the water meter in your basement. Look at the pipe that comes through the outside wall of your home and connects to your meter.
Carefully scratch the pipe (like you would a lottery ticket) with a key or a coin. Do not use a knife or other sharp tool. Note: If pipe is painted, use sandpaper to expose the metal first.
Place the magnet on the pipe.
Take a photo of the scratched pipe and submit your results on page 2 of this form.
Please upload 1 to 3 images of the scratched service line. Example images have been provided to assist you. By submitting a photo, we can verify your pipe material and avoid the need for a future appointment.
If you are having difficulty taking or uploading a photo, please contact the Water Department.
